What does it mean to look at animals—and at ourselves—differently? The exhibition explores the complex, often contradictory relationship between humans and animals: how we perceive, depict, understand, use, protect, fear and love them. Bringing together works spanning four centuries, it presents a rich and diverse panorama of artistic approaches, from scientific illustrations and Japanese woodcuts to humorous drawings, paintings, sculptures and contemporary installations.
Animals have been an enduring subject of artistic inspiration since the earliest cave paintings. Yet the ways in which we represent and interpret them are constantly changing, reflecting broader shifts in knowledge, culture and our understanding of our place within the natural world.
During the guided tour, Dr. Martin Steffens and artist Sebastian Meschenmoser will offer insights into the exhibition and invite us to consider the boundaries between human and animal perspectives—and what these reveal about ourselves.
